FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

why is it free?
The government has put funding in place to designed to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions across the UK - meaning lots of eligible households can upgrade their heating systems completely free!

All we'd need is just a few details to figure out what upgrades you’re eligible for too!
WHAT IS THE ECO4 SCHEME?
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) replaced ECO3 from 1st April 2022 and will run until March 2026. The government has allocated 4 billion pounds – it spreads 1 billion across 4 years– to improve the energy ratings of UK homes and reduce carbon emissions. ECO4 is distinct from ECO3 in that more people will have the chance to qualify because of LA Flex or flexible eligibility.

The scheme came into effect on 27 July 2022, but ECO4 can be applied to eligible measures installed from 1 April 2022 to March 2026.
who is eligible for free solar?
The ECO4 scheme is open to low-income, fuel-poor and vulnerable households receiving benefits. To be eligible for solar PV panels, your home needs to meet specific requirements:

  • Currently have an inefficient heating system within the D-G EPC energy efficiency band.
  • Own your home and live in it, or live in private rented accommodation.
  • Live in an all-electric home (on and off-gas) where biomass boilers or District Heat Network has been ruled out
  • Receiving government benefits (e.g. child benefits or income support)
If you are currently not receiving benefits but are considered low-income, you may still qualify for ECO4 under the ECO4 LA Flex.

LA Flex gives councils the flexibility to determine eligibility criteria in their region — criteria are no longer limited to availing benefits or even based on income and will be tailored to the circumstances of people in the area (e.g., age, number of occupants, number of children, condition of the house, etc.). This means that more people in the UK will be able to get solar panel grants.
HOW CAN I APPLY FOR A FREE AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP?
Homeowners or private tenants in receipt of a qualifying income related benefit may qualify if your home has an EPC rating of E,F or G.

If you’re a landlord, and your tenant claims benefits, you may encourage them to apply for the grant, thus improving your properties energy efficiency and saving the tenant hundreds of pounds every year.

Lastly, we have agreements to offer our customers access to the ‘Flexible Eligibility Scheme’ (LA FLEX) to offer access to the ECO4 scheme whether on benefits or not.
who is eligble for free insulation?
To get free insulation or other home efficiency measures under the main part of ECO4, households must:

  • Live in an eligible property
  • Be in receipt of means tested benefits
  • Have a household income lower than £31,000 per year
Households that live in an eligible property and are on low incomes but don't necessarily receive means tested benefits may still be able to get free insulation through the ECO4 Flex scheme.

As ECO4 is aimed at households that would benefit most from energy efficiency upgrades, there is strict criteria on the households that are eligible.

To be eligible for ECO4, households must be either:

  • Owner-occupiers in homes that are in EPC bands D, E, F and G
  • Renters in bands E, F and G
