The Great British Insulation Scheme, often referred to as GBIS, is a relatively new Government energy efficiency scheme which is to be administered by Ofgem. The purpose of the scheme is to improve the least energy-efficient homes in the UK in order to help reduce energy bills and tackle 'fuel poverty'.
It is a scheme that complements the Government's already popular Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, however, there is one key difference.
Whilst the ECO4 scheme could look at a house as a whole to deliver multiple measures to make it more energy efficient, the GBIS scheme generally looks at delivering single insulation measures instead.
But the question you may be asking is 'Am I able to access the GBIS scheme?'
Along with supporting low-income and vulnerable households, the GBIS scheme is also available to those living in homes with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D-G, and within Council Tax bands A-D in England and A-E in Scotland and Wales.
Sadly it does not apply to those in Northern Ireland.
As for your living situation?
You can be a homeowner, landlord or tenant (either renting privately or from a housing association). However, if you’re a tenant of any kind, it's best to contact your landlord before you get in touch as before any work can be carried out you would need their permission.
So what kind of heating upgrade could I be looking at?
Those who qualify may be able to get support to install the following kinds of measures:
- cavity wall insulation
- solid wall insulation (internal or external)
- loft insulation
- flat or pitched roof insulation
- underfloor insulation
- solid floor insulation
- park home insulation
- room-in-roof insulation
